Plot Summary
Premise
Heart of the Beast follows James Belmont (played by Brad Pitt), a retired U.S. Special Forces Command Sergeant Major suffering from severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The Inciting Incident
While traveling through the wilderness, Belmont suffers a severe heart attack mid-flight while piloting his floatplane.
The Survival Trek
The journey becomes a harrowing battle against nature and physical exhaustion:
Predators:
Along the trail, the duo faces off against a territorial grizzly bear, which Odin helps drive off. Severe Injury:
While attempting to cross a treacherous bridge spanning a canyon, Belmont slips and falls into raging rapids. Odin helps pull him ashore, but Belmont’s arm is broken. In a grueling sequence, Odin assists his owner in manually resetting the fractured bone. The Wolf Pack:
As they continue, weakened and low on supplies, they are ambushed by a pack of aggressive gray wolves. A brutal, desperate fight ensues. Belmont and Odin defeat the pack—with Belmont killing the alpha male—but Belmont suffers a deep, fatal bite to his abdomen.
Climax and Ending
Knowing his injuries and failing heart will prevent him from making it the rest of the way, Belmont writes a final note.
Faithful to his companion until the end, Odin leaves Belmont’s body and finishes the journey alone.
